Can't get text field horizontally centered in a table cell. I've tried putting the cursor after the field and selecting align center under text attributes, but it's not working.

I've used align center as you've described and it works fine. Can not understand why it is not working for you.

You could try using css style sheets, but it shouldn't be necessary.

There is something else happening here which is not evident in your message, as jsut prior to sending this I created a table, dropped in a text field and centred it.

The only thing I can think of is the table cell width is less than the width of the text field. If so, right click the text field, then select properties. The text field width will have no value in it. Put "15" in the width setting which will make the text field smaller, then recheck whether it is centering.

Otherwise....... got me.
