Simple question. Is there a difference in performance when it comes to Celeron and Pentium 4 processors? I have heard that Pentium 4 is much faster than Celeron.

BIG difference. Celeron's lack a L2 cache. Celeron's run on a slower bus (P4s run on 4-100mhz busses).

There are plenty of other differences, but these are two of the main ones. Nate Gagne

For starters, both processors run at different speeds. Today, you can find celerons between 600-1100 MHz. P4 CPU's run from 1400-2000 MHz.

Secondly, the P4 has 42 million transistors compared to the celeron's wimpy 7.5 million. The celeron does have an L2 cache, but only has 128KB. The P4 has twice the amount of L2 which is important since most of the predictions of the CPU's next round of clock cycles are handled by this area.

To be honest with you, I wouldn't choose either unless you've got the money and patience to go with the P4. If you're looking for a high performance CPU for the low cost, look at the AMD Duron which kills the celeron. Also, the AMD Athlon is not much more and can easily rival the P4 with a lower price tag.

The list goes on and on...

There was rumor that the P!!! (I still laugh at the fact that it's !'s instead of I's) with the tualatin core was going to be the next celeron. A problem was that tualatin chip running at around 1.4 outperformed the P4 @ 2GHz.

So as Intel has developed chips, there was the first P!!!, the new P!!! with the tualatin core, and the P4. The Celeron offering is still the crippled original P!!!, just not worth the money these days.

Seriously look into the AMD Thunderbird. As AMD is trying to get general consumers to understand that megahertz is not an absolute test of power, the T-Bird @ 1.4GHz is in many areas on par or faster that the P4 @ 2.0GHz, which costing over $400 less (that's just because of the overpricing of the 2GHz, the 1.8GHz P4 is $300 less than the 2GHz chip, which is still way more than the T-Bird @ $125).

If your still looking into something a bit less costly, the Duron is just almost on par with the T-Birds, and a 1GHz Duron is available at decent prices.
