Hi, I admit I'm fairly novice at this but I'm trying to solve the following:
from a USB connected CD RW drive, I'm trying to play cda files; they are recognized by the software (WinAmp, CD player, etc) but while everything appears as though it's playing, no sound comes out. WAV files play just fine. I read another thread about this but no one seemed to have solved the problem - so I thought I'd put in my own with my own unique set of problems.
The thought that one of the "aggresive" audio players may have been deleted and in the course deleted a necessary file seems likely for me. My question is, how do I find out what that file is and where do I get it? I've tried installing new versions of the players (eg - winamp) but it still does the same thing. Any recommendations?

Ive never owned a USB CD-RW drive before

CDA files are CD Tracks right?

With internal drives you need the seperate Audio cable to allow sound to be played through the drive

The only thing I can suggest is to try the following:

- Make sure you don't need a seperate cable for audio (Unlikely)

- Update driver software for CD RW drive (If any)

- Check the volume control application that come with Windows

You mentioned about .wav files, do they play through your USB CD RW, Do MP3 play through your drive

It's all about establishing what (if any) sound can play through the drive then going from there

Good luck

There is a check box on the properties of the CD drive in the device manager that says something about "Allow Digital Audio...". Try that.

SOLVED.

Thanks all for the help - in the end I think it WAS the "aggresive media player" problem. I must've deleted some file that one of them (winamp, divX, WMP) had stuck somewhere else. But I stripped all of them out and then re-installed WMP and it's working now. SO, thanks a lot for the suggestions - and now we all know something that works for next time (to suggest trying).

Thanks again
~Rob
