I have a similar problem, but the CD-ROM works fine all the time but when I try to read any CD thought the CD-RW then it just freezes completely! I built two identical computers from the same components and I am having the same problem with both of them! I don’t know if it is a software problem or a hardware one. I have tried a different IDE cable, I have swapped the order of the drives around on the IDE Cable , set one as a master then the other. I have tried running the CD-RW on its own, but still nothing. The drive is a Philips 16x10x40x, mobo is ECS K7S5A. Does any body have any ideas?

I have tried the supplied Easy CD (Version 5 Basic), Easy Cd 5 Platinum, and Nero. I am running Win’98 Second Edition

Did you install the drivers for it? You might need new ones. -God Bless

What is your chipset? Any known conflicts between it and Win98SE? check the MS knowledge database. Check the Phillips web site. Check that the CD-R/RW is master on secondary and CD-ROM is slave (on either primary or secondary) and check that when you were swapping them around, you also changed the jumpers to align with where you were connecting them. Look in device manager for conflicts. Check that you have the correct up-to-date drivers compatible with your O/S. Disable DMA in device manager. Post back.

benjie,

Your configuration should work as I have seen this configuration sold by many retailers. Do you have 2 CDROM drives (one being CDRW), or just one?

The mobo may be the source of your problem. It's running a Sis 735 chipset which is typically found in budget OEM PC's (no offense). The ECS K7S5A mobo has been known to contain a ton of bugs and is not preferred for stable environments. Visit this webpage for a couple known updates, although I didn't see one that would probably have any effect on your current problem:

- Like LeKirk mentioned, your best bet will be to search the MS knowledgebase as well as consulting Philips tech support. I didn't see a support link at their website, but there is a contact option to send them an email.

Thanks for the replies, I have looked at the philips website and there doesn;t seem to be any updates for drivers for the CD-RW, I am running that and a 54x CD-ROM, but the fact that that works ok, but the CD-RW doesn;t even work on its own, suggests a software problem. I am going to e-mail Philips Tech Support and see wat they say
