I had recently upgraded several core components to my WinXP Pro system. That included the mobo, CPU/HSF, RAM, SCSI adapter, SCSI HD.

Prior to my major upgrade, everything on my system worked fine. I was able to burn CDs without a hitch. A few days ago, I picked up a 48x12x48x LiteON CD-RW. After installing it, I was unable to access it. Was it a loose cable? No, I checked everything twice. Was it jumpered correctly with the DVD drive? Yes, the CD-RW is set to master, the DVD was set to slave. They are both the only two items plugged into the primary IDE controller (my HD drives are SCSI).

To try and remedy this problem, I updated the mobo BIOS to the lastest release. That didn't fix my problem, so I then attempted to update the firmware for the CD-RW drive. I had discovered when I got back into Windows, my device manager for the 48x12x48x CD-RW drive status read, "This device cannot start. (Code 10)". I then replaced the new drive to my older 12x10x32x LiteON CD-RW.

One problem might have been having both Roxio Easy CD Creator and Nero 5.5 installed on the same machine. I've uninstalled both burning programs. Afterwards, I installed Nero 5.5, and updated it with the latest patch. That didn't fix my CD burner problem. I then updated ASPI to 4.71. That didn't fix it. The only thing I can think of trying is making both the CD-RW and DVD drive masters, and putting them both on seperate IDE controllers.

...I had just found out that I can burn CDs, as long as they're data disks. I couldn't copy a CD in my DVD drive to my CD-RW drive though. I then set both drives as master. Afterwards, I left the CD-RW on the primary IDE. The DVD drive I put onto the secondary IDE. According to the device manager, they are both running properly. However, although I can still burn a data disk, I can't copy a CD—CD. What is up???

Please let there be a solution that I'm overlooking, 'cause I'm all out of ideas.

Is Nero actually recognising the DVD drive? If it is, can you select files on CD/DVD in the drive to be part of contents for CD you're writing?

PS. Uninstalling Easy CD Creator can have unpleasant side effects (I know it did on my 2k installation - although didn't stop CD copying - and I'm also using Nero instead).

Can you copy an audio CD to your hard drive first and then burn the files to the CD? One thing to consider, your DVD ROM may not be fast enough to copy CD to CD. They recommend the CD-ROM speed be equal to or faster than the burner on copying CD to CD from what I've read. "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing....." [idea]

Helps to have a 52X CDROM to copy CD TO CD R/W. Of course then you could have a CD, CD R/W, and a DVD PLAYER/R/W. I wonder how fast you can copy data over a network connection? If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

Step 1: Does your CMOS "see" your CD drive?

If no, check the cables and connections. If they are fine, return the drive, it's a lemon.

If yes, Step 2: Is the CD drive in Device Manager and installed without errors?

No? I'd return the drive. If CMOS sees it but Windows doesn't, there be gremlins. Windows doesn't usually need a driver for a CD drive to be recognized and working (but you will need the provided driver to use any advanced features of the drive).

Finally, you say "can't" copy a CD. Do you get an error? Does the system freeze? Does the CD have copy-protection?

I would have to reinstall my 48x CD-RW to see if CMOS sees it, but that won't happen till later when I'm off work. Great advice from all of you.
