Hi,

I have a Ricoh 6200A CD-RW drive. Recently I used it to back up all my files to CD while I formatted the c:\ and re-installed my OS. Everything went fine until...

I started putting the files back into the correct folders. I had no problem for a while and everything seemed to copy over fine, but then I put in a CD-R with some of my MP3 files on. It copied over the first few OK, but halfway through the computer froze up until I ejected the CD. I thought it was the CD as my normal CD-ROM drive also had the same problem. I tried another CD of MP3s - same problem. I tried an old MP3 CD I made a few years ago (which I know works as I often play it on my DVD player) - the same thing happened in both drives.

I disconnected the CD-RW and connected a spare CD-ROM drive I had as the secondary master in its place - everything worked fine again. I put the CD-RW back - the problem returned!!!

Does anyone have any ideas what's going on? Why should it not read MP3 files, but work fine for everything else? Why does the CD-ROM drive freeze up when the CD-RW is connected?

This is especially puzzling as Windows is a fresh install, it hasn't been on the internet yet to get any viruses (and I have Norton for that anyway). Help!!!!

Try connecting the CD-RW drive as Slave to the CD-ROM drive or to the HD.
If that does not work, then the CD-RW drive may be bad.

Might be you need a special codec or something. CD-R's do not make good backup devices. Maybe there are some improved drivers you could try. You could have also saved a Virus or something on a CD-R or it could just be corrupt data. Might be a lousy driver or the CD-R could be going bad. May have to disable the Copyright protection stuff in WinXP if that is what you are using.

If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

Did you install the latest verion of your mobo's chipset drivers? That can make a world of difference, esp. the IDE and AGP drivers.
