CD/RW and DVD drive issues with XP

I am currently battling a challenging issue with WinXP. I have a customer that had a computer infected with a virus while he had WinME. And he took to another computer shop and had them do a virus cleaning and then they transfered the old drive info to a fresh version of XP. Well what they didn't know is that the virus tagged along and corrupted his current computer OS. So he brought it in and I ran virus cln software and I could not get rid of the virus...it was like it was replicating itself. So I transfered only the files and folders that where not ifected which was pretty much everything except the old windows dir (since thats what was infected.) And reformatted his hard drive and did a fresh install of XP. well everything was working when I gave it back to him, but now his DVD-Rom and his polaroid BurnerMAX32X will open some cd and run some cd but not others.Like Nero or Brittanica. I called Polaroid today and they gave me some suggestions like make the polaroid the master (which I did with no success), and to called the manufacture and update the firmware. Well they sent a reply back and told me to go to a website for the firmware and there was no firware for windows. Now Polaroid told me that they have been fighting with the manufacture to get firmware updates with no success. Can anyone help me and give me some ideas? Thanks
