I have one internal CD-Rom and an external Firewire burner. All of a sudden, they are both gone. They are flagged in the device manager but updating the driver does nothing. Any ideas? Im stumped. BEHOLD! As Steve Jobs introduces us the latest in desk-lamp technology!

If you unplug the firewire rom drive, does the other show up correctly? What OS?

There have been several other posts recently about cdrom's disappering. Try a search and maybe you'll find how they solved their problems.

About the only cause I know of is there are some viruses that cause the cdrom drives to be hidden under Windows. This might not be your problem, but its always safe to check.

I suspect I uninstalled a commonly used file but I have no idea how to find out which or get it back. BEHOLD! As Steve Jobs introduces us the latest in desk-lamp technology!

Ok nothing is working. I'm just gonna reinstall Win2k. Just one question before I do. Do I have to back up all my email, address's, favorites, etc.? or will the reinstall just replace the missing files and leave my address's/email alone? I cannot lose that stuff. BEHOLD! Did you uninstall Roxio's EZ CD Creator. This commonly causes the cd drives to disapear on XP, maybe on 2K also. The fix is mentioned several places in these forums.

I thought that might have been it. I had uninstalled some app called Fireburner and I suspected it might have taken something that EZCD could bring back so I uninstalled and reinstalled EZCD. Lets just say Im typing this post on a fresh install of XP :( All 3 of my Win2k installers decided to fail last night so I had to install some copy of XP I had laying around. Sucks. BEHOLD!
