CD Rom support not working

I installed a new Maxtor 120Gb HD. Whenever I reboot it with the boot disk & request CD ROM SUPPORT, it starts off like it is loading the appropiate drivers, then it freezes.

Have you updated your BIOS..?
How old is Mobo and BIOS....?
What OS.?

It sounds like your using 98.....with a startup floppy..?
If so try it without CD ROM support(leave CD in drive) and see if you get to an A:\ prompt.....when there...enter C:\ ...what happens...if you get to C:\ try D:\ and E:\

No I have not updated it. Im not to sure on how to do it exactly. My MOBO is about 2 yrs old. Its an ASUS CUSL2 & Im not to sure about the bios. I have the HD partitioned into 6 partitions. I had WIN95 installed then upgraded to WIN98 then WINME. The bad thing is that I can not locate my WIN95 disk being that all other disks are upgrades & this was the only full version that I had.
Also when I I try w/o CD support and get to the A:\ prompt, I can go all the way to the corresponding 6 partitions, no further.

Two things you can try...however only one has a real chance....since without the original 95...you'll be prompted by an Upgrade version to insert the orig....just for verification at some point during install....

IMO...forget ME..go with 98...
Are you using a 98 Startup floppy? or 95....
95's does NOT contain the Generic CD ROM drivers available with win98 startup disc
If 98....Did you Format C:\ yet...?
from the A:\ prompt..Type Format C: hit Enter

If 95..go here and get a better boot disk..

Try to find that Original...OK?
Do you have another PC to view the contents/whereabouts of the Win98 directory on the Upgrade versions..because if you know where they're located and you have CD ROM support eventually...you can copy over the OS in DOS.....again though.you'll probably need verification to use it

Its a WIN98 Biit disk. When I originally installed the Maxtor HD, I ran MaxBlast. This allowed me to partition & format the HD. I also downloaded the boot disks for both WIN98 & WINME & that hasn't help. When I boot with one I get NTLDR is missing. On the other boot disks, it just freezes when I request the CD ROM SUPPORT. However when I dont request it, I get to the A: prompt.

Oh! .....you used MaxBlast...(i really wish you had said this before, not that i've got all the answers)
What file system did you Format with...NTFS....?
If so, Win98 wont work.....

If you want to use FAT32...use the win98/ME version of Fdisk to enable larger than 32GB partitions..see here

I know this pertains to xp, but that NTLDR message(NT Loader) is related to the NTFS.....

It seems MaxBlast decided to Format in NTFS....in which case Win98/ME wont see the partitions or volumes....

Fdisk /status...whatcha got....?

I am not in front of my computer at this time, but it was FAT32. After partitioning this and rebooting, I was able to see all the drives that I had created. Should I just go ahead & format using FDISK off the WIN98 boot disk that I have???????

Yes........I would....
Yet, here's the thing, you have no full version OS to install.....

You know.I hate to say it, but maybe you can contact MS and give them the documentation necessary to prove you have legal copies of the 95 full and/or 98/ME upgrades...or your going to have to find your 95 disc or get a friend to help....

You can try to copy over the win98 files from upgrade version by (Assuming you've partitioned and formatted)
(Again..make sure it's FAT32...not NTFS)

Restart...while Holding down the CTRL key..you'll see the 98 startup menu....choose "Command Propmt Only"......
in C:\> typeE:\hit enter usually for your CDROM
drive (remember it gets pushed back a letter when booting from floppy..Even though you've got 6 part's...I "think&quot

In E:\ type the following bold lines and hit enter after each line;
CD Win98you should now see E:\Win98
Setup

the CD command stands for (change directory)....
(Not sure exactly where on Upgrade disc the win98 directory is, but you have to find it)(someone once in these forums said that there's no Setup.exe file on the Upgrade version vs OEM or Full Retail versions)

You must have CD ROM access for anything to work
If your having trouble getting setup to run

Try to copy the files over from the Command prompt again....

Copy E:\Win98\*.* C:\Win98 /S

I have went ahead & formatted the HD using FDISK. I kept it easy & did not partition the HD. When I do the FDISK/STATUS, it shows C: 51407 Mb. However when I do a DIR C: it shows 117,XXX,XXX Mb. I tried using 3 different bootdisks that I have & none seem to work.

If you formatted ONLy..you used Format.com, not Fdisk
fdisk is a partitiong tool only.
you saidI have the HD partitioned into 6 partitions
your 51 Mb is probably only your C: directory..cause that's all the available space left..
Did you use Partition Magic or alike in the past on that drive

No I only used FDISK. What I did was delete all the partitions using FDISK. I then started all over using FDISK. This time I only kept the C: drive. I then went ahead & formatted this drive & still nothing.

Did you ever find the 95 CD..?
Go into BIOS and make "Boot from CDROM" as First boot device
Exiting Saving BIOS changes

take out CD in drive if it's in
put 98 bootdisk in floppy...
CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart

From A:\ hit enter after each line
type SYS C:
type C:type MD Win98
type fdisk /mbr
Put 98 CD in drive....or 95 preferably if you found it
So now both Floppy and CD are in
CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart
choose START w/CD ROM support

I tried the booting from CD the other steps & still not working. Its still locking up when it appears that the driver is going to load. I have no clue what do do. I still cant find my CD.

I have a Compaq Deskpro PII 400 running Win98 OS. I am trying to upgrade to Win 2k. OS. I went into the setup by pressing F10 (I assume this is the setup for BIOs), to check the boot order. It is in the following order: 1)CDROM 2) Floppy Disk 3) Hard Drive. And I also changed to the "Full Boot" option from "Quick Boot" option.

But So when I pop in a 2K OS CD, I expected the PC to boot from it, but it did not. It shows on the screen momentarily that it is trying to boot from CD, then from floppy, and then simply boots from the hard drive every time. I recently used the same CD to install Win 2K OS in another PC, (which I planned to discontinue using.) So I know that the CD is good.

I also tried to boot from Win98 2nd Edition boot floppy, with the same result. Strangely enough, I was able to successfully boot only from a Norton System Works CD.

Does anyone have any advice, tips, and/or clues? Thanks in advance.
