What are you using for a DOS BOOT Disk ?

Can you test this CD-ROM for full functionality in another computer ?

Darn. I reread the posted question, and noticed the "LAPTOP" part.
I should have done what I normally do: When a post has a defecit of information, I ask for more info.

> What you may have to do is this:
In BIOS change BOOT order: Put the CD-ROM as 2nd, after the floppy, and before the HD 0.

> Then, when you boot up, with no floppy disk in, your CD-ROM will be the BOOT device.
With the Windows CD in the CD-ROM,....... you may not have to enable the CD-ROM in DOS with the BOOT disk.

Thanks for the reply, I have changed the CD Drive over with a known good one and the same problem, I changed the boot sequence over as you suggested but no change, I get'Invaild Systen Files', am using a MS select Win 98 CD.

can you boot to a DOS A prompt using a startupdisk? Need more info on the hardware.

Yes i boot to A: using start up disk. Then the drivers for the CD drive seem to load up fine, but when I go to DIR off of D: it wont read, see earlier errors.

Thanks Guy

do laptop Cd drives have a different driver standard to desktop Adapti drives?
