I'm attempting to install a CD Burner on a Compaq EN 733. Here's the dilemna:

When both the original cd and the additional cd's are on the same cable, the pc won't recognize them (change the jumpers into every config possible -- both cable select; one master - the other slave; both slaves).

When making the CD burner a stand alone; and the original cd is on the same ribbon as the hardrive both cd roms are recognized but not the hard drive (IDE error message; no fixed disk).

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You may have a bad CD burner. swap the cd drive you have with the hard drive and see if the problem follows the new drive. If so replace it.

You could have a bad burner as noted previously, or you may have the cable connected incorrectly. Master drives have to be connected to the end of the cable, while slave drives have to be in the center. Could very well not be the problem, but it's better to check it before investing in a new drive.
