CD ROM & Soundcard problems

I'm working on a Packard Bell Running Windows 98. This machine had been locking up multiple times while running various programs. I ran a virus checker on it and found 25 infected files with an 'APStrojan' virus. Many of these files had to be deleted. Among those files were 'Uninstallms, msdos98.exe, mine73.exe, mine.exe and multiple miXX.zip files'. After deleting these files I started having problems with the CD ROM player ( LITEOn Ltn301) the machine says the device is not ready when I place program type cd in it. When I place a music CD in the CDROM it will try and play the CD, but I have no sound. I'm not even sure what sound driver this thing has in it. I've tried reinstalling the cdrom driver, but it still doesn't seem to help. As far as the sound driver I've tried the XpressAUDIO™ 16 bit sound and that doesn't work.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Wow. Sorry to hear about you infection. But my recommendation is to wipe it clean and start over. If you dont feel like that is an option try running SFC and replacing any systems file which may have deleted. But a clean install may be in order. Best of luck and Happy New Year. Oh yeah, after updating all system files update all device drivers as well.

Ashoemaker, before you wipe everything out to start over, you might run the Windows system file checker to detect corrupt and missing files. You will find that in Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information. It will be there under in the Tools menu. If you don't find anything there, you might run a utility to diagnose for bad Registry keys and misdirected program links. Two excellent ones that come to mind are Norton WinDoctor and PC Doctor OnCall. The diagnosis (only) program can be downloaded for free at

The last resort before a complete fresh start would be to reinstall Windows.
