I am working on Win 2000 Pro, using Office 2000. I needed to install a feature from the Office 2000 cd (importing excel spreadsheets into outlook) - everytime I put the cd in, it sounds as if it is reading the cd, but then spits it out. This just started happening. Even inserting a music cd - it loads the media player, but then ejects the cd. Can anyone offer any solutions? "Try everything at least once."

The few times I've seen it happen, had to cure it by replacing the CD drive.

Oh no.....what steps can I do/check...to avoid having to replace it....? "Try everything at least once."

I usually check them in a different computer to verify operation before tossing them out.

There really isn't much that can be done to repair a CD-ROM drive and usually isn't cost-effective based on hourly labor rates versus buying a new one. Once in a while, running a Lens Cleaner [brush-type only, no liquids] will help.

On the 'Net, new ones can be found as low as $35 and in WalMart less than $75. Can even get CD-RW drives for less than $75 on the 'Net, possibly much less.
