cd drive

Im having problems with my cd-r drive, It keeps on reading the drive even without a cd on it.
My comp specs:
pentium 4 running windows xp professional sp1
40 g HD (ide 0)
dvd drive (master ide 1)
cd-rw (slave ide 1)

I've interchanged the dvd and cdrw coz of this problem. but its not solved yet. Is it a os problem or hardware (cd-rw)problem? How can i stop the cd-rw drive ffom reading when no cd is inserted? My comps stops responding when this happens. Thanks

Go into Device Manager, and uncheck the box for 'Auto Insert Notification(or similar) in the Settings tab for the CD-ROM drive.
