Some one told me to replace my 52x cd drive with 64x. According to him 64x is capable of running even scratched cds. Is he right? What is meant by this x thing here?

x = 150MB/per sec

52x = 52MB x 150MB Per sec = 7800MB per sec

speeds are contingent on memory also buffering. some run fast, some run real fast, some are dogs!

as for reading sctached CDs - speed does not matter. if it is scratched then you stand a good chance of losing data. going fast just means you won't notice it[bigcheeks]

The rating on a CD drive is it's MAXIMUM read speed. The drive will probably never reach the maximum speed anyways, as a lot of different factors affect what speed the drive will actually spin the CD. Typically, if a CD is scratched or otherwise marked, today's drives will slow down in order to try and read the data reliably.

As for a 64x CD drive, I've never seen one anywhere. It may be just a marketing gimic.

My memory is not as good as it should be, and neither is my memory.

I have forgotten more than I can remember

Saying that a faster drive will be more likely to read scratched CDs is like saying that a faster car will give you a smoother ride.

It's the quality of the CD drive that affects how well it copes with scratched or otherwise faulty media, not the speed.

As J741 says 64x is probably a gimmick - 52x or 48x are the common top speeds. "52x" just means "52 times as fast as the original single-speed drives".

A word of warning though: if your disc is damaged then spinning it extremely fast - which is what happens in a CD-ROM drive - can make it shatter. If it's spinning at warp speed when it shatters it will damage the drive. So if it's cracked, throw it out!

A star from me.
