I used the cd burning feature at a friend house on his computer...when i got home to copy the contents of the cd on to my drive there was nothing there?? doesn't xp have the protection built in? will i have to go back to the friends house to recover the data another way??

Thanks, PAUL

The cd burning feature on XP, in my opinion, is very buggy. When you move the files to the cd it does not really burn them, you have to tell XP to burn them after the fact. And sometimes that does not work either. I recommend using a third party software. Roxio or Nero or Fireburner are all adequate.

You have to verify how the CD was created. With a burner, you can use an app like Nero Burning ROM or Roxio Easy CD Creator. Are you sure one of these apps were used?

The reason I ask is that there is another way. Windows XP has a built-in burning feature that allows you to drag and drop files/folders onto the CD drive, which will burn them instantly as if it was a floppy or hard drive. Both Nero and Roxio have apps that do this as well - INCD and DirectCD. If this was the method used, then the CD can only be read by those programs with a burner. This is called Packet Writing on the fly.

If you didn't use the Packet Writing option, then make sure the CD session was closed. Until it's closed, it can't be read by regular CDROM drives.

Heres my problem....it did burn someothing on the disc..because i can see the burn marks.. The data that is on the disc is very important. i had someone backup the data before we reformatted the clients drive. the client stressed over and over again that his data is very important..so when i get back in...i chk the data...and nothing...nothing...zilch..nadda..then i thought to myself..."OH S**T" What i haven't tried is going back to the original pc were it was burned..any suggestions on how to retreave this info on the cd??

Thanks, PAUL

You need to answer the following questions first:

1) What program, if any, was used to burn the data? Easy CD Creator and Burning ROM are two popular examples.

2) Are you checking the data from a burner or regular CD-ROM drive? Sometimes, if you forget to close a session after you finish burning, you can still view it from any burner.

3) If questions 1 & 2 are not very clear, then explain in detail the process you took to burn the CD. There are two different kinds of burns, and I need to know which way you did it before I can answer your question!
