Ok, BIG problem! Got an Optorite 5205 CDR/RW 52x & Sony DVDR-+RW Q28A, both drives have been working fine for me under Win XP Pro SP2, was able to burn CD's with Nero 7 with crossfade, or 2sec gap. Changed my OS over to Win XP Media Center, and now having major problems burning anything at all.

When i put a blank disk in, it always comes up as a 4x disc, until i reinset it, and then sometimes it works as 52x. With Audio CD's all tracks are jumpy as if the CD's are scratched (yeah i checked the disks!). Ive updated the firmware for both drives, changed it over so the CD drive is the slave, in the Secondary IDE Channel settings, checked it out, both running on DMA mode.

Weird thing is, both drives can play disks fine.

Any ideas would be much appreciated!
Steve

Try burning a cd or other audio source that you have been experiencing problems with, but set the speed manually to 4-12X see if this solves the problem.

I have has similar problems, actually when in auto speed it stated it had burned the complete CD and there was nothing on the disk. It was still recognized as blank.

Part of this is using 'rated' media. Like rated for 32x etc.

Lesser cost media that has not been rated is fine at lower speeds & I have time & less money.

Hmmm tried using at lower speeds, but sometimes when a disc is inserted, Nero wont let me choose any speed other than x4 but when it has let me choose a speed to write at, choose 32 nd lower, still getting problems with disks

What version of NERO 7 are you using?
Then how did you install the MCE version of HOME? was it a fresh install or?

Nero 7.0.8.2, think thats the latest version.

MCE was a fresh install, brand new HDD, tried reinstalling XP Pro, put on all updates inc SP2, no joy... cant be 2 faulty drives, surely!?

I would suggest that you use the NERO Clean tool, can be downloaded from Nero's website. then uninstall NERO Clean out all drivers/etc with the Clean tool, reinstall NERO...

do you have any other burn software installed, if yes which?

Tried Nero Clean, uninstalled s/w completely, reinstalled latest version again still the same, insert a disk to my Optorite drive, and picks it up at 4x and wont let me change it, insert another disk into my Sony DVD writer, picks up the disk, lets me change the speed, tried writing some music @ 32x, an hour later disk still not completed.... thinking about buying a cheap drive today along with new IDE cable to test... will let you know the results!

Ok, brought a new CD drive, so far good... ish, drive works fine, burns CD's no errors. Did find something interesting out though, I completely forgot that I had Itunes installed as well, and this uses the same DLL files as Nero does, so when installing/uninstalling one of them this caused some issues. Tonight im going to uninstall both, reboot, and keep nero, and see how things go after that!

ok, think im going mad! Built a new PC, good spec, p4, running @ 3.2ghz, gig of ddr2 ram, big 200gb hdd, installed a new cd drive (sony) & dvd rewriter (also sony), downloaded the latest nero, and im getting exactly the same problems all over again, burn a cd, no errors, but as soon as i play the cd its jumpy. if i had hair to tear out i would have torn it all out! any ideas?!

Replace the MP3 Plugin from NERO with another one, earlier issue like from v 6.6.0.18 or totally with LAME plugin for NERO...

it seems that NERO 7 does have problems related to that Plugin when it comes to Encoding/recoding Music to CDDA (WAV)...

excellent! thanks for that tip! will give it a go tonight and let you know!

Right! will also try that! with its own mp3 decoder to test! I loaded the Lame decoder, did a couple of CD's to test, the first CD skipped a bit on the first track, then after track 6, cd wouldnt play, on the 2nd CD didnt work at all.

Fingers crossed with this new version of nero!

I did find a forum, i will post the link when i find it, basically this guy all but admitted there was a problem with Nero and jumpy CD's with their MP3pro encoder and he and nero couldnt replicate the problem, Ive now got 2PCs with the same problem they can try now!

Ok, promising so far, new Nero, same Lame driver, ive managed to to 1CD last night, and works perfectly!
Will try again this weekend burning a load of CD's and see what happens!

Ok, sounds promissing... keep us posted...

I have downloaded the Nero 6.6 something version and it works great, i have seen lots of forums saying that there are lots of problems with nero 7 and telling everyone to change back to 6. I have not used 7 so i can't confirm, but so many people can't be wrong. I think it's nero 7 that's messed up, you should stick to 6.

just a thought......

Some people make things happen, some people watch things happen, while others wonder what happened.

well tried again with 7, ok with a few cds, but when playing the quality was pretty awful. Loaded ver 6 and was happily burning cd after cd, perfect quality every time! had a problem with my normal cd writer though, it saw every cd i put in as a 4x cd, not 52x, put them into my dvd writer and it recogised the same cd at the correct speeds, random, but at least i can now happily burn cds off all day!
So thanks you all for all your suggestions!
