I have 2 CD-Rom drives I is just a standard CD-Rom drive the other is a CD-RW.

When trying to make a direct copy of a CD (which I have done 100s of times) I get error messages and I have come to the conclusion that my CD-Rom drive is broke.

My problem is I wanna create a copy of a CD so how do I do this with only 1 CD drive?

Please give details of programs that I may need.

Thanks very much

Matt

Can you copy it to the hard drive first?

You could also use Clone CD which would create an image file onto your hard drive and then you can burn the image file onto a CDR. I have used it on discs that do not work just burning a copy of them and I have had good luck getting a copy of any CD as long as it fits onto a disc.

I don't know, I have never used Padus, only CloneCD.

Unless the cd has a special form of copyright protection (newer cd's), then you should be able to just drag and drop the contents of the cd into any folder on your hard drive. Then use your burning software (Nero or Adaptec) to copy the contents to a CDR.

If you use Adaptec 4.0 or later, you should be able to create an *.iso image of the cd's contents. After the ISO is copied to the hard drive, simply double-click it and it will automatically open into the data layout ready for copying.

You usually can't simply "drag" the files off a music cd to your HD. If you want to be able to copy music cd's without a cloning program you will have to get a ripping program to extract the music files off a standard audio cd. I think you best bet would be to just get another cd-rom drive at a used comp store for 20 bucks. Unless there's a freeware version out there any software is likely to cost just as much.

That's right, sorry I forgot to mention that. If you are talking about a data cd (game, software, etc...), then you should be able to drag & drop. Otherwise for music cd's, you'll need to extract the tracks using ripping software like OSUMAN mentioned. Adaptec (Roxio) and Nero both have this feature built-in.

I recommend Music Match Jukebox. It will rip and save to a file and write a music CD. It will convert from MP3 to Wave and vice-versa. It beats all the others hands down in my opinion.

Norton makes a program for Virtual CD Drives. It makes your computer think you have another CDROM drive. I have it on a disk that came with my computer, but I have never tried it. If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.
