Hi,

i'm prepping for the ccna exam and want to purchase any hardware to practice on. Does anyone know what hardware you're supposed to know? I heard the catalyst 1900 - is that still true or no longer with the new exam? are there any other routers/switches that we should know?

thanks.

avoid catalyst 1900.
1900 has CatOS where no one uses now.
2900 is way to go, you may find one 2924xl series around $160s if you are lucky in e-bay, but do try to get it.
2900 carries Cisco IOS. It will be lot more helpful than getting that 1900 CatOS series.

You're right, but when I got my CCNA about 4-5 years ago, before the exam was split into two, the Catalyst 1900 was specifically the switch used. Is this no longer true?

You will most likely need to know how to support both types but I highly doubt there will be any more than 1 question relating to it if even any. Not a bad idea to know them though as they are still widely used in the field. Check out the 2950 series. Cisco has a program called cisco network assistant that you can use to manage your switch or even a cluster of switches. : )
