I got my CCNA with just books and using a simulator.
The is not that hard and with some experiance using either
routersim or boson sim you should be fine. Better to save the money for real routers if you want to persue CCNP or CCIE.
although they can be expensive, depending on your skill they can be worth while.
My advise would be read the book, use the routers to practice, take it, and if you fail do the course, just reiterates what you already know, but asking questions can be a simple way to get a grasp of stuff you don't understand
