I cannot find any relevant info on Event Id 7, source KDC (W2K server) on any of my usual sources. Has anybody seen this before? What is the cause/resolution?

have you tried searching your error on the microsoft technet ( website? i found this one among others that contain the same error message:

SYMPTOMS
========

When you start your computer, you may receive an error message indicating that
the Keyex and Mouex drivers did not start, and Event Viewer logs the following
event:

Event Id:7
Description: service failed to start.
Source: Keyex.

RESOLUTION
==========

To resolve this issue, use the Devices tool in Control Panel to disable Keyex
and Mouex and to enable the Keyboard Class Driver and Mouse Class Driver.

MORE INFORMATION
================

The Keyex and Mouex drivers are not native to Microsoft Windows NT 4.0; they are
installed by IBM's Netfinity remote control software. To disable and replace
them, follow these steps:

1. Start Control Panel.

2. Double-click Devices.

3. In the Devices dialog box, under Device, select Keyex, click Startup, click
Disabled, and then click OK. Use the same procedure to disable Mouex.

4. To enable the Keyboard Class Driver, select Keyboard Class Driver, click
Startup, click System, and then click OK. Use the same procedure to enable
the Mouse Class Driver.

5. Click Close to close the Devices dialog box. Quit Control Panel, and then
restart the computer.

Thank you jmerencilla for your thoughts. I have tried searching on TechNet, eventid.net and google.

The text of the event log message I get is:
"The Security Account Manager failed a KDC request in an unexpected way. The error is in the data field. The account name was <user or computer account> and lookup type 0x8."

The values at the end vary.
The data is (words): "0000: c0000017".

All help gratefully received.
