Hi all,

I have a Catalyst 6509 with 2 SUP1A installed and act as single router with highavailability. Just last Thursday switch become froze and dead over the night. After pull off the second blade and power-cycling the switch the switch return to functional.

I ran show test 1, and everything is pass with .

I ran show log 1: it shows an EOBC Exceptions/Hang: 1

NVRAM log:
21. 12/9/2004,02:43:59: EobDetermineChannelMisbehavior: on module 1 is faulty. Module powered down!

After these commands, I power-cycle with 2nd SUP1A inserted, but it failed to bootup and shows minor hardware issues in 1st SUPA1A console port. I remove the 2nd SUP1A and power-cycle the switch and now I am able to get back into console. I removed highavailability, disabled synchronization by changing boot config-register and now I able to bring-up the switch with 2nd SUP1A inserted. However, the 2nd SUP1A still malfunction. Plug-in console port on 2nd SUP1A but nothing output to hyperterm. My question is there any way I can troubleshoot it down to determine either 2nd blade SUP1A went bad or the backplane of Catalyst 6509 chassis?

Any suggestions are great appreciated,

Have you tried swapping the positions of the sup blades? Put #1 in slot2 and #2 in slot1? If the problem follows the sup then you know it's a sup issue.

Yes, I swap the SUP1A blade, and the 2nd blade failed in slot 1. Now I wonder which part on this SUP1A is causing the problem. However, I don't have any extra parts to swap in and out. Will a failed RAM, MSFC2, Bootflash or mainboard casuing this problem?

Thanks,

SH

Well...it looks like it's your SUP module. Tracking it down from there is a different story. You didn't state that you had issues with Module 15 or 16 (MSFC's) so I don't think your MSFC is bad. From what you've described, I think the main board for the SUP is bad.

It is in hybird mode running with cat6000-supk8.7-6-10.bin as boot file.

After I swapped the blade it the LED on SUP1A shows:
Status: Red, System: Off, Active: Off, Pwr Mgmt: Red.

Also nothing output to Console port.

Thanks,

SH

This blade was the original blade in slot#2?

Yes, I put 2nd SUP1A (was in slot2) to 1st slot and leave 2nd slot open. Just another question, why failed on 2nd SUP1A is caused the failing of whole switch, is it because of High availability? If high availability is causing the problem, the only thing that is working during production period is bootflash RAM, and mainboard?

Well you can't really have HA workinig with only one SUP in the chassis. It needs both SUPs. So if you have one SUP that works and the other one doesn't, then replace the one that faulty. But if you put both SUPs in the same slot and they both act the same, then you can point your issue towards the chassis. Their are no critical issues with HA in the version of CatOS that your running. So you'll just have to swap the blades around till you find the bad one and leave it out of the chassis.
