catalyst 4500 freezes out

Hi All
I have a catalyst 4500 switch on my network, fairly new, its actually not up to a year old and its running on IOS version 12.2(31)SG.
Couple of days ago, it just frooze out, and the whole network grounded to a halt, i could not console into or get into it in any other way at all
I eventually had to reboot it to be able to access it and resolve the problem.
4500s are supoosed to be rugged, does anybody has a clue/solution?

If he rebooted it as he indicated all logs of the event are gone. I would recommend setting up a syslog server and sending your logs to it for review.

I actually lost the logs because i had to reboot, I am working on setting up a syslog server.

In the meantime is there any body out there that has experienced this before?

I have never seen a 4500 lockup and not be able to console into it. My first thought would be a broadcast storm or a spanning tree issue.

Bridging loop by someone plugging in a little switch at there desk . If you misconfigure bpdufilter this will shut off spanning tree on the ports and it could be prone to bridging loops if someone plugs a rogue switch in and loops 2 ports togther. This is all speculation though . We have seen happen on a 4500 but the problem was caused by our misconfig and misunderstanding of a particular spanning tree feature. Without seeing the config it is hard to say though . If you aren't using bpduguard you probably should be .
