I have a catalyst 4006 in my main wiring closet with a Cisco SX 1000 Fiber GBIC. On the other end of the fiber is a Dell 5012 with a Nortel SX 1000 Fiber GBIC.

I am unable to ping from switch to switch. No trunking is set up, and only the default VLAN1 on both switches.

Is there something I need to do on the Catalyst 4006 to bring this link up?

If you do a show interface on the gig port, does it show as being up?

I am afraid I have still got a lot to learn about managing this Catalyst Switch, but here is the output from several informational commands:

I have a 4006 and a Dell 5012 and also had this problem when i first brought up the switches. There was two things that I did. One thing that I had to do was set the DELL switch port to auto detect... The Cisco negotiated the speed and duplex. At first when i brought them up I could not get a link light. To solve that another thing I had to do was reverse the fiber going into the Cisco Gbic.

good luck I hope this helps

Brian MIS

Which port is the Dell connected to? For this port, please post a "sh port <module/port> command.

Resolved this problem by disabling Port Auto Negotiation on the Catalyst 4006 GBIC port.

Thanks to everyone for the imput!

eastbr, I also having problems with our Cisco 3524/48XL switches, and the Dell 3024 switches using the Cisco GBIC 1000BaseSX devices. Have you found any solutions.

What are you trying to accomplish on the 3524/48 xl switches and, what is the architecture?

We got two Cisco switches 3548 & 3524, and 4 Dell 3024 switches. Our building is 3 floors. 2 switches will be on each floor. The 2nd and 3rd floors are under const. we want gigabit fiber to all of the switches/floors. right now i'm testing the dell switches that will go into the 2nd floor(testing on the 1st floor for now)with the Cisco switches above them. using Cisco WS-G5484 GBIC modules. I have found lost of people having problems with this with different manufactures of switches. this is my config on the two GBIC ports. port Gi0/1 is the uplink between the two Cisco 3548 & 3524 switch. Port Gi0/2 is the GBIC to the Dell 3024.
