I am installing 3 Catalyst 3550 Powered Switches. These switches will provide inline power for our ip phone system and our wireless access points.

Somebody told me that hooking up normal equipment to these switches will cause problems. Is this true? I don't want to put a normal port on this switch and fry a workstation.

Thanks in advance!

The only possible problem is hooking up a VOIP phone, and then quickly unhooking it and hooking in a regular NIC card. If you unplug a VOIP phone (or other POE device), then you need to wait 10 seconds for the port to stop suppling the inline power.

Plugging in a regular PC, etc for the first time on a port won't damage either the switch or the PC. The switch will detect if a device needs the power or not before suppling it.

If you wish you can turn off inline power with -

(config-if)# power inline never

on selected ports.
