Catalyst 2900MF XL

Hi all,

I wonder whether Catalyst 2900MF XL can work with single mode in 100BaseFX ports (Cisco doc contains declaration of only MM) and if so, how much distance it can extend between the neigbors.

Nope, SM requires a precise beam (1300nm laser) where your MM ports use LEDs at ~800nm. You CAN use MM fiber on a SM port with increased attenuation but not the other way around. You will see ~20dB loss if you try it. (The std says no more than 9dB)

I don't know the exact range of the 100BaseFX ports on the 2900MF's, but I know you it's at least 3000 feet on MM fiber.

BTW, the MM ports use 850nm LED's.

I looked around some more, and found the limitation for the 100BaseFX ports is 1640 feet (500 meters). I don't know how this can be, because I'm running it much farther than that. Any suggestions?
