Catalyst 1900 cannot connect using serial

Hi first time user here. i'm just bought a cisco 1900 switch (24port) and a 2501 router and i cant conect to either of them. i have the proper cable (flat like telephone line) and a db-9 connector. no i know that i have to set the hyperterm to 8-n-1 (flow-none on the switch, i think) and h/w on the router. if this is wrong plz let me know. now i try using com1 and 2 with the same settings and still get no response from the router. can some1 plz help me with this?? thanks.

Save yourself a lot of trouble go to radio shack and get a db9 null modem connector (5- $6) , this and a straight thru cable will get you into almost any cisco equipment .

ok the null modem cable ur discribing is it male-female or does it have a RJ-45 connector some where in it? because i dont have a db-9 connector on the back of my rotuer. just an aui (15 pin). so how would a db-9 cable work with a RJ-45 connector?

Your flat line cable with RJ-45 (I think is black or blue color) connects you to the console port. On 2501 this port is marked as CON (or CONSOLE), on 1900 switch this console port is on back side of the switch (where is the fan, switch serial number...).

For the PC side, your db9 connector connects you to 9pin serial (COM) port and then you connect one side of your flat RJ-45 cable to this connector. Then start hyperterminal (9600,8,n,1) and you are ready to configure the devices
