Hi,

Very simple question - I've got a catalyst 4000 gigabit ethernet switch with loads of traffic going through it but none of the utilization lights are on. Is there a command to activate them or is there a command to see what % of the switch is being used.

cheers

Ed

Those LEDs are really there just for kicks. You're better off running a 3rd party tool that monitors the CPU load of your Switch (an SNMP management app would be one). What Sup engine do u have in the 4000? Because the latest Sup 3 and 4 are quiet powerful, and can move a lot of traffic.

I was basically told by Cisco that they are not functional, I was also looking for a command to enable them, not so much for me, but for my boss's boss... he likes to see lights blink on his 600k in network equipment...

Thanks for the replies - we're using Sup 1 but I think at the moment it's really not being worked that hard. Is there any SNMP monitoring software that you would recommend?

Depending on the size of your network, you could run CiscoWork for Windows ($2K), which includes Ipswitch's Whats Up Gold, or if you have a big network, run HP OpenView or CiscoWorks 2000.

you can also run 'sh sys' on the switches and they will tell you peek and current utilization, this will also tell you how busy it is and if it's being over worked...
