I think I understand the backup procedures finally, but need to study up on the restore process. The book talks about media must have a catalog before data can be restored. I went into the restore tab and the backup media is listed. My question is are these the catalogs, or do I need to do something? I'm confused.

You need to put the media in, and right click the media, then go to catalog so that BEX knows what tape is which... It's pretty much a straight forward process... You have to know where the info is, though... i.e. tape name/date etc...

Hope this helps...

If you start a restore and you can already see the data you want restored for the proper date then the tape has already been cataloged.

Backup Exec automatically creates a catalog for any backup jobs that it runs.

The only time you should need to catalog a tape is if you clean up your catalogs (they take up large amounts of hard drive space) or if you are restoring from a backup that was not created using Backup Exec.

Thank you for answering my question. So far, I haven't had to restore, but I wanted to get this cataloging straight just in case . . . .

Also, if you are restoring from a different server than the one you backed up with you will need to catalog the tape regardless (I mention this in case you need to consider offsite disaster recovery and have no means to replicate existing catalogs to the location).
