capture settings and compression - smaller files

I have two vhs tapes about 15mins each of me skydiving. About 15 jumps per video. I want to capture them, chop them up and make a cool video. I already captured the first tape and it's 6.18gb. I didn't have a clue what to put the capture settings on so I think it's at the highest. I'd like to burn this to a dvd when I'm done, but at this rate it'll be a 14gb file. I only have 512mb of ram so I can't work with large files. I thought maybe I'd break the video down into individual jumps instead of one long video and that might make it more managable.

could you guys please give me some tips as to how to deal with this much video and what settings to capture and save with.
