Got a newer Dell Insipron laptop running Vista. Got a corrupt registry and won't boot up. Well, it does boot up, but blue screen in the same place every time and reboots. Recovery console works, but can't fix the problem. My wife wants her files off it, so I have a SATA to USB adapter. I connect it to my desktop, XP sees the drives (one drive, two partitions) and I can see SOME files, but I think the NTFS security is keeping me from seeing the files I really want (my documents and her desktop). I tried taking ownership of the directory, but that didn't work. It still just shows me what it did before.

Anyone know how I can get at those files?

Are you using Recovery Console on the Vista machine?

For the Vista machine,

Have you tried running it out of the Windows environment? If you have an install DVD that you can boot to (or a Startup Repair option via the F8 Safe Mode screen)?

Are you looking here for the files?

X:\Users\Usernamexxxx\Documents
X:\Users\Usernamexxxx\Desktop

Where X = drive letter, (or username).

Something like BartPE can save files to USB on the Vista machine.

Ah, I was NOT looking in the \Users directory! OMG, they are all right there! Perfect! I didn't know they had changed the location of that stuff in Vista. Sometimes the hardest things to see are the ones that are right in front of you.

Thanks linney!
