Hi all,

I purchesed a laptop for my wife and I can't see the laptop on the network. However the laptop can see the other computers on our home network. The home computers can ping the laptop and laptop can ping the computers back. In the network places the laptop can see the other computers but it does not see it's self there. I turned off all the fire walls and still no luck (including windows firewall)

The home computers are running XP PRO and the laptop has XP HOME. The laptop can us the internet as I'm using it now to type this msg.

Thanks for your help...

Rob

Computers are like a bag of hammers, they won't do a damn thing until you pick it up and SMASH something with it!!

Brimestone,

All pc's need to belong to the same workgroup name.

Check to see if this is set correctly. or run Wizard and produce a floppy to set all others the same. This is a selection during the wizard setup.

This should take care of all the settings saving you having to do this manually.

look for file sharing at microsoft help base on the different types of sharing this will sort also out the reason you cannot see each other...

Stand up wherever you are, go to the nearest window and yell as loud as you can, 'I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it anymore.'

Thanks for the tips, Yes I forgot to mention, that I made sure all computers or on the same workgroup name, can't do the floppy thing because the laptop has no floppy drive.'

I feel the root of the problem is with the laptop, It can see the other computers and I can share the drives there too, but the laptop's network places I can only see the other two computers and not the laptop. If the laptop can't see its self in the network, how can it be apart of it? and yes, sharing is on.

Thanks

Brimestone,

Check that wins is part of the protocols on the laptop. You could also look at running from the cmd line, ipconfig, and record the IP for all 3 computers. They should be identical except for the last set of numbers. i.e. 192.168.0.xx.
If not you need to troubleshoot where the offender is obtaining it's IP. or set as static.
