If I go to find>>computer, I can type in an IP address on the network and it will find the computer. That will not work on my pc though. I can ping them, but I cannot identify or access them. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling all the network stuff (nic driver, netbeui, tcp/ip, client for MS Windows Netowrk), no luck. Any ideas?

Hi. You have not stated the conditions under which you are operating. Are you talking about an office LAN? Internet WAN? I am runnig UNIX with a cable connection. I have a persistent tcp/ip address. I see two dozen attempted intrusions a week in my log files. Most are simple Windows intrusions since they leave a distictive log file. I'm running nmbd and smbd to facilitate communications across my private network. People can "see" me in their network neighborhood and try to access my computer. My network is secured and I am allowing people, if they know how, very limited access.
Just because you can ping a tcp# it doesn't mean you can access they're computer. In fact it's against the law to do so in many states. Don Swayser

Do you have a DNS or WINS server on your network? Is the client configured with the correct name servers address'.

Oh, sorry. It is an intranet WAN. We use a proxy server. I have a static IP address. This is through a tcp/ip network. We are using Ethernet. No, i'm not accessing other peoples computers illegally. These are computers on our network at the company I work at. No illegal stuff here. Is there anything else I can tell you.

Nope, no WINS server. It is all through tcp/ip.

How 'bout DNS server or at a minimum a hosts file?

You must be using something to translate the IP address to a hostname!

Any computer you want to connect to by name (netbios or hostname) across a router must be defined/translated either by a name server (DNS or WINS) or via a static file (hosts or lmhost). This is because the router will not pass your broadcast traffic used in trying to determine the computer name.

If you do not have name servers, then you must modify the hosts file and include IP address to hostname mappings for all those computers you are trying to access across the router.

We must have something else that goes on that I don't know about because this works on many other pc's. This used to work on my PC, until a couple of weeks ago. But, I don't know what would have made it stop working. I did not change anything and everything else (internet, LAN, email server, db server) are all working fine. I used to go to Find>Computer and type in the IP address of a computer on the WAN and it would find it.
