I have a CD-RW that I have been using as data backup. Last night while I was using it I got an error message that I couldn't save to it. Ever since then I can't read the data on the disk. It looks like the formating disappeared? Is there anyway to recover the data.
When I put the disk into the CD-RW drive it says nothing the CD label is gone. I have tried to put the disk in two different types of readers, still the same result.
Help! I would perfer not to loose the data.

Have you tried reburning the disc to another one? [yinyang] Tranpkp [pc2]

Since, as you say, this CDRW is only backup data then the original data should still be available on you hard disk!? Then all you have to do is re-backup to another CDRW!

As for your first CDRW did you use "directCD" to copy the info or are you using Roxio (Adaptec) software? This is the usual software package that comes with HP CDRW drives! If you used "directCD" then there is a utility in the software called "scancd" this will check the disk to see if it can be fixed.

Otherwise you'll have to find a recovery software to extract the data...I use "easy recovery 512"...look for it on the net! Or do a search for "data recovery freeware" and find one that will examine CDR/RW drives/media. The info isn't lost just hidden...good luck!

If you have access to an ordinary CD-ROM with the READER installed you should be able to read the disk - Copy the contents to the hard drive if you want and re-burn it.

In my experience, once this problem occurs with a particular CD-RW disk it will happen again in the future - not immediately, probably a few weeks - but it will happen again. Chuck it away when you are done with it.

Regards.

Thanks for all your help. When I went back to the original drive that the CD was burned on it reinstalled the system files just enough for me to get most of the data off. Then it said I had an unrecoverable error and to save my work in a new location.
