1) PC working in industry: nonstop 24 hours /365 days
2) Intel MB, Intel PIII, 512MB RAM, 20 GB EIDE IBM Deskstar 5400 rpm, UDMA 100, ATI VGA, 2 PCI Ethernets
3) QNX 4 OS with Photon microGUI
4) Weeks/months of correct work before the problem, weeks/months after the problem
5) I had this problem even with another Industrial PC
6) Both PC's have IDE HDD's connected via Plastic swap drawer's (one UDMA 100 80 wire, the other standard IDE 40 wire). The drawers are not of the same type/mark.

Problem:

The SCADA system freezes, I guess, due to impossible accessing file(s) on HDD. For example: one shift (user) log's off, another operator cannot log in (it is the basic system service of multiuser QNX OS!) - as if the User name and/or User password weren't valid. I can explain it only so that the system could not access the Users files and/or encrypted password file on HDD.
After the system reset everything works fine for weeks/months (that means the user/password files are OK).

Last time after shutting off the freezed PC BIOS even couldn't detect the HDD!!! Put it to another PC - worked OK. Then put it back but directly (not via the UDMA 100 EIDE swap drawer) - worked OK too. But there was some (not critical) logical mismatch (chkfsys /dev/hd0 corrected it) on the HDD.

With the other industrial PC we connected the HDD directly -the system detected it - then put it back to the drawer - and it work's nonstop OK for months from that day.

Seems that the disks (their electronics in the back PCB) were in some "freezed" status. Is this possible?

How it is possible that the MB (BIOS) sometimes cannot detect the EIDE HDD?

Thanks
