cant put an ip address on a 6513 gibit port??

Guys,
might seem simple but its stumped me;

SWA(config)#int gigabitEthernet 9/48
SWA(config-if)# ip address 10.68.0.194 255.255.255.252

% IP addresses may not be configured on L2 links.

SWA(config-if)#

Can anyone tell me how I get around this issue?

add the command "no switchport" to turn it into L3 port
