I am trying to promote my standalone w2k server to AD. Im in the wizard going through it and here is wht was done.

1-selected DC for a new Domain

2-selected create a new forest of domain trees

3-typed in the full dns name: microsoft.com

4-when the netbios name box came up it was black. i thought it
would have the name microsoft. so i typed in microsoft

5-went through the couple of logic boxes for C;\\Winnt etc,etc

6- the dns for microsoft.com could not be found box came up and i selected that i would configure dns myself

7- I then selected that the DC be in mixed mode

8- typed in password

9- reviewed everything, then it said Active Directory Install faied. The network cannot be reached.

what do i make of that error. I just have a standalone box that im practicing on. I dont have it hooked up to a network.

just found this out from the microsoft site

apparently you have to have your box hooked up to a hub, switch, etc. I thought you could just promote you box from a stand-alone state. correct me if im wrong. I would of sworn that in the past i've promoted my box from a stand-alone state.

I got it working. first wht i had wrong is tht i configured the same ip address and another pc without knowing. then i didnt have it into a hub, or router in my case. (D-link router is wht i have).

again this is my little lab that i use to practice for the m$ certs.
