After years of no trouble at all, suddenly my PC can't play music CD's. Enhanced CD's and regular computer CD's work fine, but not music CD's.

When I throw a music CD into the computer, the CD player just scratches and scratches and... Until I remove the CD.

Since only music CD's are the problem, I guess its a software related problem.

Windows 2000 5.0.2195, Servce Pack 4
Samsung CD-ROM SN-124

Yes, I've tried at least 5 or 6 different. They do all play on another computer. So I can't blame the CD's.

You try uninstalling the CD drive through the device manager and then rebooting the machine?

If removing it from Device Manager and rebooting doesn't help, try using a can of compressed air and cleaning out the inside of the drive. It reads music and data CD's differently, so it could still be a dirty lens.

To make sure it's not a Windows/software problem, try booting to a DOS prompt using a Win98SE boot disk ( Boot with CD-ROM support and see if you can read the directory of a music CD (.CDA extensions). If so, then you know the problem is software-related.

Thanks for the tips. Unfortunately no improvement whatever I do. Neither uninstall/reboot nor cleaning the lense made any difference.

(I didn't manage to get thru that boot disk test... The PC complained and refused to start. Probably I did something wrong.)

I had this problem, too. I solved it by going to Control Panel -> Sounds and Multimedia then click the Hardware tab, locate your CD-Rom drive and select Properties button. When the CD-Rom properties dialog appears, select the Properties tab. There you will notice a checkbox named "Enable digital CD audio from this CD-ROM device."

Check that box and hit ok. Your CDs should play just fine after that.

Hope this helps.

Darxide,

Thanks for writing.

I went to Control Panel
-> Sounds and Multimedia
-> Hardware tab
-> SAMSUNG CD-ROM SN-124
-> properties

Unfortunately there's no "Enable digital CD audio from this CD-ROM device" in the CD-ROM properties. Actually there are no check-boxes at all...

All the info I get there is the 3 different drivers:
C:\WINNT\system\DRIVERS\cdrom.sys
C:\WINNT\system\DRIVERS\redbook.sys
C:\WINNT\system\storprop.c

Still confused...

What other tabs are you seeing besides properties? Try going through Device Manager. You should have at least 3: General, Properties, and Driver. The option to enable digital audio should be there under one of those tabs for any optical device that's properly installed.

You may also want to visit Samsung's site and try flashing the firmware in the drive to the latest revision.

Try going to Samsungs website. See if they have an updated driver. Maybe that would help.
