Can't open word document after computer freezes-office xp

One of our users had two word documents minimized when her computer froze up. After the computer was rebooted she could not open the two documents and trying to open them would cause word to stop responding. If I saved the document to a floppy or accessed it across the network on another machine it opened with no problems. What might be causing the PC where the documents froze up to begin with to not be able to open the documents? The PC in question is a Dell Dimension 4500S, 1.8GHz, 256MB RAM, Windows XP and Office XP.
