Can't move database field into text object???

I'm working on Crystal 10 using an Oracle ODBC. I remember in 8.5 I was able to drop database fields anywhere on my Design and then move them into a text object, but I can't do it anymore. I thought it was only 1 report but tried on another and the same thing happens.

If I drag my field directly from the field chooser to the text object, it works perfectly, but I don't like that as some numbers show with decimals. So I usually drop the field somewhere, remove the decimals and drop it into a text object, but it won't work any longer?? I get circle with the line through it icon.

I figure I changed a setting causing this (my reports open slightly differently), could someone enlighten me as to what I did? I searched here and on the BMC knowledge base but I did not find anything.

Thanks in advance,
Phil

Never heard of that, I just dropped a database field from the report canvas into a text object in CR XI without a problem.

Perhaps some field types aren't allowed, such as a BLOB, not sure.

I also am not aware of any setting along these lines, again, I can only think that it's the field type.

I would say that maybe you are mistaken that it is a text object you are trying to add a field to.

I never "drop" a field on a text object - but rather "pull" a field very slowly towards the text object until my pointer changes - it usually looks like a little sheet of paper is attached - and a blinking cursor within the text object - showing me where it will be placed.

Also - it is quite easy to format a field once inside a text object. Right click on text field and choose Edit Text - then place your pointer over the field in the text object and left click to select it - then right click and choose Edit Embedded Field - Crystal will now recognise the data type of the field and let you format as normal.

I would say that you either are not embedding in a text object - or the object you are trying to embed is not a field.

I hope this helps

Well, now I am even more confused.

I tried on 2 other reports and it does not work, but I tried on yesterday's report and it works... this is for any type of fields (database, formulas, etc.).

At least I got confirmation from you guys that this is possible which is what I wanted to know because I was sure I had done it before.

Same thing just happened to me. I was creating a report, changing decimal fields to integers. Then dragging them into text objects, then all of the sudden I can't do it anymore.

Did you find a resolution?

I never found a resolution. Actually, I did not run into the problem following my post on the 16th so I forgot about it. A solution would be nice, but I don't have one :(

I was able to cut the field and paste it into the text object.

ITCPhil,

Are you still having this problem? Can you drag into the text field now because I think I fixed mine.

I've not had the problem recently. I tried it just now and can move my formulars or database fields into a text field without any problem.

I don't know what to tell you really! I figure Crystal Report was just trying to push me over the edge.

I've seen this whilst running training courses and although I can't recreate the problem it only seems to happen on the Preview Tab. If you get it again, switch to the design tab and the data field will merge with the text.

Thank you SMPhillips, I will remember that.
