Hi

I'm having a problem accessing a windows 2000 server I've inherited.

I believe it has been deliberately trashed by a former employee. Initially I was unable to logon due to a missing pagefiule (system root drive letter had been changed).

Now when I try to log on I am dropped back to the CTRL+ALT+DEL box. There is no error message at all. This is definitely not an account problem as I am able to remotely access the server and create accounts, so have tried several.

Anybody got any ideas about what I could try next?

Andy

Reinstall? If you can access it remotely, presumably can backup anything you need.

Andy - we have the same problem... we built the server with no problem, install UniCenter/TNG on it and the server locked up in the process of staging the packages to it. We had to power down and restart, after which we can not logon - get dumped right back to the LOGON screen - same as you describe. We rebuilt the server and all was OK - reinstalled Unicenter and the exact same thing happened. This is working on all of our other servers, there is no difference that we are aware of. The CA stuff is deployed and managed by the distributed applications group, so they may be doing something differently, but we doubt it, as they say they are not and we trust them. If Anyone finds an answer for this - it is greatly appreciated! Regards -Mitch Morrell/Manager/Branch Office Support/ Merrill Lycnh and Co.

don't know if this will help you at all, I doubt it.

But I believe the problems on my server came about as a result of some tampering. Initially I had a log of problems as somneone had managed to change the systemroot drive letter and so it was not detecting a pagefile at all. I pointed the registry to the correct drive letter for the pagefile and that is when the logon problem occurred.

I have since reinstalled as well and am now able to log in, although this is a currently a vanilla server. Priot to the problem we were not running Unicenter on it.

What sort of specs are you running it on?
