i have two cd rom drives on the secondary channel. windows no longer loads the drivers. if you look them up in device manager, both drives show up, but with an exclamation point. windows says drivers missing or corrupt. i have uninstalled and reinstalled with no luck. i have also installed a third cd drive, still no joy. i replaced the ide cable just to see, no luck. it is a sony vaio desktop. no motherboard drivers or cd drivers on their website. i can boot to the cd drives in dos. drives are set to auto detect in bios. can i repair windows to resolve this problem?

A black exclamation point (!) on a yellow field indicates the device is in a problem state.

More information may be available in the Event Viewer or via - Msinfo32 typed in the Start Run box and looking at Components/ Cd-Rom or Components/ Problem Devices.

How to Troubleshoot CD-ROM Drive Problems in Windows XP (Q314096)

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with XP.

If you are able to boot from a CD-Rom you can try this.

You could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.
