Cant Link Excel Spreadsheet

Hi,
I have two excel spreadsheets-I am trying to link a cell in one to a cell in the other by typing in = in one then opening the other and highlighting a cell however its not working.Nothing happens. The cell doesnt get highlighted.
I have tested this by linking another spreadsheet to the main one and it works fine. A dotted box appears around the cell I wish to link to....
Is there something that I need to do with the second spreadsheet in order for it to work?

To be able to link in this manner, both workbooks need to be open in the same session of Excel. If a second spreadsheet doesn't automatically open in the same Excel session, Go to Tools>Options. On the View tab, see if the "Windows in Taskbar" option is checked - if so, uncheck it.
