Hi guys,

I recently upgraded my computer at work to Windows XP Professional. The problem is that our print server is running with Windows NT 4.0 Server and when I try to add our Epson 980 color printer it tells me the drivers aren't compatible. This makes sense because the printer drivers on our print server are NT drivers but how do I add Win XP drivers to NT Server? When try to install XP drivers on our print server it basically tells me that they won't run on NT. Does anyone know a workaround so I can print from my Win XP machine?

Thanks, Niall

When you add the printer set it up on the TCP/IP port of the print server.

Add new printer, local, and you can select new port, select TCP/IP, plug in the IP of the print server, then you will have a list of available print drivers in XP.

Thanks for your help. I just bypassed our print server altogether by adding the TCP/IP port on my computer and then configured the Epson printer to use that port instead of LTP1.

When you try to install the shared printer from the XP machine, the XP machine should tell you the drivers are not compatible and ask you if you want to install them locally. You say Yes and browse to the XP drivers. This method has the benefit of allowing your jobs to spool on the server along with all the others.

I haven't lost my mind - I know it's backed up on tape somewhere ....

That would have been a lot easier. Unfortunately it did not ask me to install the drivers locally. Windows XP simply stated that the drivers were incompatible and could not be installed. Niall

Then we have yet another case of losing functionality as Win2K does this just fine.

Another option is to install the printer as a local printer connected to LPT3: Then then from the command shell run the command "NET USE LPT3 \\<server>\<printer> /Persistent:Yes"

But going local takes away the ability to manage the print que, doesn't it?
