I have Designer installed on one machine (We do not have enough licenses to install it on my personal machine). I have Business Objects installed on both my machine and the machine where Designer is installed.

I have changed the universe in Designer. I then copied the new universe over to my machine. When I open a report on my machine, it has the old universe data. When I open it up on the machine with Designer it has the correct universe.

When I select Tools/Universe on my machine, the universe is listed. When I click on User Objects nothing opens. The same with list of values. But the status says Up to Date.

When I select Tools/Options/File Locations on my machine, my Universe file types is pointing to the right directory.

Could someone please help me. I am new to Business Objects and haven't had any training so I am trying to learn this on the fly.

Thank you in advance.

first the theory, then the dirt.

in theory when you export the universe out of designer to the repository, every user gets the updated universe the next time they use the universe, automatically and with no files copies at all.

Sometimes however, the user's copy believes it is more uptodate than the repository. in this case it never updates from the repository. you must delete the universe copy on the local PC, so it knows to reload from the repository. With 100 users, I see this about every 6 months, so it is rare!

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

Hello tdfreeman,

From your story I get the feeling you are not using BO in a server set-up configuration using a database system to harbour a repository. With a complete server-setup (which includes defining users, setting up security etc) the procedure as described by jimbopalmer is the correct one.
In that case you do not copy universe files from one PC to the other, but you export first to repository and import on the other PC.
If you are using just local installations you should be able to overwrite the older universe file with an updated one. The up to date status of a universe is in this case a bit misleading, cause this is meant to be a check against an updated version in the repository.

*** Strictly off the record, I do not think that installing designer on two machines that are used by 1 developer is a real abuse of your license ***
