My friend has a problem with windows '98. When the PC comes on the desktp there's a window with the message
"can't find lqie".

No matter what program I tried to run on it the same message comes up. I tried doing a scandisk and running Norton AV but the same message appears.

The PC was reformatted and Norton Anti-virus installed recently. The drive is divided into C:, D:, E:, F:, etc because the guy who did it said it couldn't handle everything on C:/

Anyone know what's going on.. Should I reformat the thing and start all over???

Any help appreciated,.

I suggest running MSConfig (built in) or Autoruns from to check the programs set to load at startup, and search for references to lqie.
If there aren't any, then it is probably part of one of the existing programs. I suggest using MSConfig to switch off items one by one and rebooting until the message goes away.

By the way - Windows 98 is perfectly capable of handling FAT32 drives which go into terabyte size, it doesn't have the 2Gb limit of FAT so I can't see any reason why your friend's tech divided the drive into four partitions.

run sysedit and look for strings calling it from the system files. REM out the line calling it.

Thanks for the help... Problem is, when I go to RUN and type in msconfig I get the window that says
"can't find lqie"

I'll try the sysedit at the DOS prompt and see if I can find the line that calls it up.

Probably non existing file association. Check "View file Types".

I assume you've done a file search on this pc to see if "lqie" exists anywhere on it and what it might be associated with. Same thing with the registry. Open regedit and do a search for "lqie" to see if you can figure out what it belongs to. Google and the M$ knowledge base have no idea what it is.

Yes...The only place it shows is in C:/Windows

Does its "properties" show a company name?

Can you get on the net to run a online virus scan? I would try this if possible, lqie sounds like a random 4 letter name for a executable created by a virus. I've seen a similar situation where the user deleted the file, but then could not run anything else because the registry had been altered making that file neccesary to run all .exe files. If you find regedit.exe and change the name to regedit.com it will allow the program to run. Then search for "lqie" in the registry and delete the reference (assuming there is one...).

Thanks for all this sound advice. My friend is out of town for a few days but I'll try these suggestions when he gets back and I can get at his computer. His main problem was self-inflicted because he was running without anti-virus until he just installed Norton!!

Some people just aren't beleivers :O)
