I have a problem: my browser can't display a particular site (only one site, not many, so it's not the same issuea as in the "Browser hijack by a virus, parasite, or ???" post below). I e-mailed the webmaster and he said others haven't got any problems entering it (the URL doesn't matter, site's not in English and I am sure you can access it).

Anyway, I went and deleted all of my temporary files and cookies, reinstalled IE6 etc etc etc. Nothing, everything works fine exept that site.

Today I found out that I CAN access the site if I use an anonymous surfing service like anonymizer.com, but not just by typing in the address in my browser. I even installed Netscape 7.1 and tried - same thing; can't access directly, can through anonymizer.com

I am sure I am not banned from the site/server, even the webmaster is being helpful. Any ideas what could be wrong?

Thanks

Make sure the date and time on your pc are set correctly.

The time/date IS set correctly!

I am only having problems displaying ONE PARTICULAR webiste ( so you can check it will work for you), all others work fine!

Had to get that one out of the way early on. Clears up more jams than you care to know.
Search using Find for a file called HOSTS (probably in your C:\WINDOWS directory)
Delete any entry for the web site in question from the file.

I had the same problem a while back accessing any HP website, I went thru 4 pages on Google and could not access any of HP's websites. I updated the firmware on my modem and problem solved, hope this helps.

Tried that one before I posted here, no entries for the site in question!

in the hosts.sam I only have this:
127.0.0.1 localhost

had a bunch of staff in file hosts (no extension); none for that site, but deleted everything anyway - still the same.

Any other ideas?

Sorry, "firmware"? You mean drivers? Will reinstal my DSL drives and come back to tell how it went ...

i went to the modem website and downloaded the updates. I also was on the phone with tec support and server, they all said that they have never heard of this and had no answer.

killowhat may have it, but if no joy, try running Repair on IE. Sometimes, reinstalling corrects nothing. You don't spec what OS you're running, but you can kick it off via command prompt as described in this KB article:

Also, it might not hurt to download and run the mcrepair tool (reregisters a litany of .dlls):

Ok, I reinstalled modem (nope, not Westell) and network card, still the same.

I also tried with the mcrepair tool. I don't think repairing IE would do any good as I also tried with Netscape and the same thing happens.

Basically I can't access only one site (except if I use anonymous surfing service) - everything else works ok.

This one really got me thinking ... if nothing works I'll format my disk and reinstall all over ... but that's just the last option.

this is the same problem i had. please let us know if you find the answer. I also cleaned the registry on the same day it was fixed. good luck.

Did try clearing history, cookies and all off-line content.

See if you can ping the site and try a tracert to it as well. you are not in China or some such country that restricts web access are you? ( I don't think that you are, but thought I'd ask anyway...)I would try to get there using Mozilla instead of I.E. as a test. Might narrow things down a bit.

Yes, I can successfully ping it (16ms) and tracert it.

I treid with Nestcape 7.1 instead of IE6 and it was the same thing (can't access directly, can through anonymizer.com). Will also DL Mozzila now, but I'm sure this isn't the solution.

No, lol, not from China, from EU, with 1mbps DSL and the site is in my country. I have an account opened at that site (I could access it some time ago, but note sure when this stopped).

Just treid with Mozilla. I get this error: "No web site is configured at this address."

Any ideas?

Can you get to the site if you use the ip address? i.e.
Looks like their domain name is not being resolved to the proper IP address Could be a problem with your ISP where the name is corrupted in their master address table. by going through anonymizer.com a different DNS is used to resolve.
Had this problem at the company I work for, and we couldn't even get our own web page!
If you can try a different DNS#(s) would be worth a shot.
I don't know if it would work(I'm in Canada) but here are a couple DNS#'s I use.. 24.222.0.75 24.138.0.7 24.138.0.5
(ping before you try these to make sure that they are up.)

Can't open if I type IP directly.

I'm sure the problem exists on my machine - the webmaster said none of other users has such problems and I'm with the largest ISP in my country.

Funny though, I haven't got any problems communicating via e-mail with the webmaster (which has "info@domain_in_question.com" e-mail).

I have the same problem with a few sites - adobe.com & arin.com specifically. Turns out that it's Sprint DSL problem. Apparently, some servers look see certain DSL signals as an intrusion and therefore won't render the page. There's nothing you can do about it except plead with the webmaster to fix their server software (apache/IIS).

There's always a better way...
