Hi,
I have 2 computers - Desktop and laptop running winXP Pro SP1 and connected to internet via HUB. Everything is OK with internet but there is no connection between machines.
Before installation of XP I had full LAN without problems.
Any clue?

When you say there is no connection between the two, do you mean that you can't browse to them via My Network Places? Can you ping one when sitting at the other? Do they have static IP's or are they set for DHCP? There are a couple of different possibilities...please provide more details.

I can't even ping from desctop to laptop but oposite way there is a ping.
Both computers are set to DHCP

When you did your ping, did you do it by machine name or IP? Where are they getting their IP's from...your ISP's DHCP server? Is the XP Firewall feature enabled on the desktop? DO a tracert from the desktop to the laptop...if networking is setup correctly, there will be one hop...if not, there will be multiple hops as it goes out to the internet and comes back in. I've seen before where someone had 4 pc's getting dhcp from their ISP....three of the PC's were getting IP's from one server and the other was getting it's IP from a completely different server....the lone pc couldn't see the the other three.

MickeD - how is the internet connection shared? Normally with a hub, you'd need to use ICS on one of the XP machines. But you said both are set to DHCP (I assume you mean pick up IP address automatically?). So what's assigning IP addresses? Have you got separate external ones from ISP? If so, think you might need another network protocol for filesharing (as you have 2 external addresses. With ICS, connected machine acts as DHCP server (with its IP address set to 192.168.0.1). You could try installing netbeui on both machines -

OK. I turned off the firewall from laptop and now i can ping it. Using tracert i find out that ping is going via ISP (2 hops)

Most ISP's block traffic on port 138 and 139, which are the ports that your pc uses to browse the network. There's a few things you can do:

1. Buy a cable router. This will give you the advantage of hiding your internal network, and allow for browsing between the pc and laptop.

2. Use the net use command from the CMD prompt to make a perm mapping to shares. Do net use /? to find the correct syntax for your situation. For example, lets say that the pc has an IP of 192.168.0.1 and the laptop has an IP of 192.168.0.2 and that the administrative shares still exist. From the pc, trying to map the c drive of the laptop, the syntax is:

NET USE M: \\192.168.0.2\C$ /USER:<WHATEVER> where M is an arbitrary letter that is not currently assigned to any drive, be it local or network and <WHATEVER> is a user that has access to the administrative share on the laptop. If the users and passwords are the same on each machine, the /USER:<WHATEVER> part can be dropped.

wolluf - Thank you. After installing NetBEUI everithing is OK.
pdxphx - Problem is solved. but NetBEUI is not supportet by Microsoft anymore. So problem is in different subnet and gateway addresses i got from my ISP. So I want to solve this issue with ISP's Tech Support. I'll keep you informed about results if you want.

Thanks a lot to all

Are you allowed more than 1 routable address from your ISP? You might be getting away with it for now...the answer they might tell you is that they don't support more than 1 PC unless you pay for more than 1 address...cable router might be in your future...
