can't enter vlan database mode

I'm sorry for asking so many questions all of the time but I've searched and can't find the answer to this one...

I've got a Cat 2916xl running IOS 11.2 SA3 and I cannot get it to go to "vlan database" mode to configure any other vlans than the default VLAN1....when I put in the command vlan database I get the usual error message about bad command....

I read that the switch has to be in "server" mode? to do this????

How do I do that?....

The multi-VLAN port functionality is currently not supported by Cisco IOS Release 11.2(8)SA4 on the following devices:

Catalyst 2924-XL-A
Catalyst 2924-XL-EN
Catalyst 2924C-XL-A

Catalyst 2912-XL-A
Catlyst 2912-XL-EN

If I recall correctly, you need at least 11.3 SA6 (??) I went ahead and bumped mine to 12.x which fixed the entire mess.

I think that what the release notes are referring to is making a port a multi-VLAN port, not defining multiple VLANS on the switch. I think that 11.2(8) SA3 should support this. Are you in enable mode when you enter the command?

BTW, the 2916XL is a 4 meg switch and can not be upgraded to version 12.

This is the version that will fit on your 4 megs.. I'm not sure if 6 will.. it's not clear.

If you do a show ver does it say enterprise? or standard?

I got the IOS and am going to install it right away...
I had figured out what I needed to do...but you just confirmed it...thanks...

I sure am getting a lot of "real world" learning experiences..lol....this stuff should be the focus of the ccna and ccnp certs...
