For protection from the Sasser worm, I installed the security update KB835732 and also KB841720. Now, everytime I try to download some programs from the internet, all I get is the message "Your current security setups do not allow this file to be downloaded". I have already uninstalled these updates but still I cannot download and get the same message. Can anybody show me how to bypass the security setup that prevents me from downloading files?

Do a system restore.

It would help us all if you could distinguish:
. Cannot download any file. The error message is XXXXXX
. Cannot download certain files. e.g. files with a .pdf extension.

Thanks Bill but my mistake I did not make restore point before I updated. Files I cannot download are those with zip and rar extensions.

MS Security hotfixes force a restore point prior to installing on XP.

The restore points should be there. You look at that, and I will investigate any .rar or .zip issues. I have not seen one yet, but I believe you.

The Hotfixes would have forced XP to set restore points.

Best,
Bill

I suspect the issue is not the Windows Security Hotfixes, but a virus.

I am sure you have Norton or some other AV active scanner, but please try the Panda, Trend Microsystems and McAfee online scanners mentioned in smah's FAQ: faq760-3862

This issue is unlikely a MS Hotfix, I believe.

Bill

Bill, I don't think it is a virus /worm that is causing this problem. My ZoneAlarm and Armor2Net is blocking access to my ports 135 and 445 and my McAfee have the latest dat files. I also have scanned my system with the latest Stinger and my system is clean. It is the security update and the sasser removal tool that causes this problem.

As for system restore, it was disabled and did not enable it before I did the updates.

File Downloads can be Enabled or Disabled via IE/ Tools/ Internet Options/ Security/ Internet Custom Level/ Downloads

Can you download files that aren't zip or rar?

Yeah, I can download files except those with zip and rar extensions. I have tried several sites to download programs and utilities, and managed to download those with cab and exe extensions but when I download those with zip and rar extensions, I got the security alert message.

an issue i noticed with the recent security updates:
in IE, under tools, internet options, advanced, security, do not save encrypted pages to disk became unchecked. this resulted in not being able to save pdf files. After checking this option, then closing and opening IE, downloading pdf's worked again.

have you tried downloading these files with netscape? that should bypass any security fixes as well as any worms targeting IE..

I don't use Netscape. As for the security options, I have checked unchecked one after the other but still no go. I think the only thing to do is re-install Windows XP.

Thank you, guys.
